what happens when you install the newer windows... will my
files get transferred over or do I need to save them to
disk first?

It is always a good idea to keep backups of important info somewhere
other than the harddisk . . . in case the harddisk fails, for example.

However, upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98 should not affect
your personal documents such as letters, spreadsheets, or address
lists.

if you do an upgrade, your files and settings should all stay in place...
but backing them up is *always* a good idea...
