Many tmp files are ordinary text files that one can read with Word or
Notepad. However, a tmp file could be anything and so Word or Notepad
may not be able to read it.

Strange. Did you try searching for *.tmp?

No

Presumably your instruction to the search command was not the right
instruction.

Right-click on the file, choose "Properties" and uncheck the box

any such file is a temporary file
you can rename it to end with .txt and directly open it in notepad
or wordpad
