My old Compaq with Windows 95 is running very slow.  My hard drive is over
half empty and I've up-graded by RAM to 256.  It used to run fast but not
any more.  I thought perhaps the problem was to many programs running at the
same time.

When I hit Ctl-Alt-Delete, I got quite a list of programs running.  I'd like
to shut them down but I am not sure what they do !
I've tried to find out, but to no avail.  Here is the list below.  Can
anyone tell me which ones to dump and which to keep?  Thank you.

MONITR32
TRAYCLNT
NSCHED 32
LOADWC
POPROXY
LOADQM
NAVAPW 32
SYSTRAY
HOMEBASE
RNAAPP
CPQSHELL

A few things to try:
Empty the Internet Explorer Cache (tools, options, delete files, delete all
offline content)
Defrag:  Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools

don't remember and don't think you need.

> TRAYCLNT
??

> NSCHED 32
Norton (AV) has something (probably a scan or update) scheduled

> LOADWC
don't remember, don't think it's important

> POPROXY
Protects your email from viruses.

> LOADQM
don't remember, don't think it is a necessity

> NAVAPW 32
You will want to continue running your antivirus program.

> SYSTRAY
Your clock and the items beside it are in the SYStem TRAY

> HOMEBASE
??

> RNAAPP
This is a dial-up networking program, it should be running only when the
modem is connected.

You have a Compaq program that you probably don't need.

Don't forget that ctrl-alt-del (Task Manager) only shows programs, it does
not list the 'Services' that are also running.

Places where programs start include:
1.  config.sys (can be edited with notepad putting rem[space] in front of a
line disables that line.)
2.  autoexec.bat (same as config.sys)
3.  win.ini (can be edited with notepad. a semicolon (;) at the start of a
line disables the line.
4.  Startup folder in Windows.  Move the shortcuts to some other folder
while you test.
5.  The registry (WARNING: editing the registry can be very dangerous to the
operation of your Windows operating system, proceed with caution).
5a.  localmachine, software, microsoft, windows, currentversion, run (export
and then delete the items you want to disable)
5b.  user, software, microsoft, windows, currentversion, run (export and
then delete the items you want to disable)

There are other places that may be starting programs (one person said he had
a list of 13 locations that start programs/processes in Windows)

This will give you a start.
