I was trying to clean up an old 486SX that had windows 95 on it.  I
reformatted my hard drive thusly:

started computer, went into windows 95
exited win95 to the dos prompt via the start button
got c:\windows
changed directories to c:
formatted the d drive  then formatted the c drive

I restarted the computer using the boot disk I had made before I
started this whole thing and the computer won't work.  It starts up,
recognizes both my drives and then just sits there.  I see the light
on, the a: drive is running but nothing happens.

I have tried 15 different boot disks, most do nothing, the others, I
get an invalid system disk error

I can't get back into the computer.  What did I do wrong.  I have
never not been able to use a boot disk/start disk before.

Any suggestions?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you formatted the C: drive, there is no longer an operating system
on it. Also I did not think you could FORMAT C: from running it from
the hard drive, which is what it looks like you said you did, only from
a boot disk.

Bad boot disk?

Bad boot diskette drive?
Boot order C: before A:?  (should give consistent results)
What happens if you try with HD disconnected?

Did you use format C: /S or just Format C: ?
If the latter, try Sys C: from boot diskette (after booting off it)
If no joy, repeat the format of C: as Format C: /S

As above.  More on why you felt the need to nuke the PC may be
relevant - e.g. possible pre-file-system boot virus persistance.

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is
set to "A: then C:".  Also, make sure the floppy drive is configured
properly as a 1.44 MB drive.  Be sure to save any changes when
exiting.
