Hey all

My work still uses the lovely Windows 95...okay, I might
be sarcastic.  But, my computer seems to be having
difficulties keeping up with all the work that is on the
network, or on my computer.  Throughout the day, my
computer gives me this error message:

system resources low. please close any programs to free up
space.

For instance, while in Microsoft Excel 97, when I click on
the print preview icon, it won't let me. of if I try to
copy and paste some cells.

To generalize, I need to free up my system resources.
Other than deleting tmp files and doing the usual (defrag,
scan disk for errors).  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance. If you respond, please write to my

"System Resources" are two 64-KB heaps that the OS makes available to
programs. The programs use them for things like window structures,
dialog templates, cursors, paintbrushes, pens....  Programs are
supposed to use them as needed then return them when no longer needed.
If a program is badly coded, or if it crashes before returning them,
then they aren't returned. In that case, you cannot reuse that space
until you reboot the computer. There is NOTHING you can do to increase
this space, it's hard-coded in the OS. Adding RAM will not help.
NOTHING will help.

You free resources by shutting down programs. The more programs you
have running at the same time, the greater strain you are putting on
"resources". Look at the System Tray on the right end of your taskbar.
Each icon there is a program that's running in your computer. Do you
really need all of them? Right or left click on the ones you can do
without, and see whether there's a menu item to shut them down. Some
of them will have a menu option to prevent them from starting
automatically, for some you'll have to look in your Start Up group (or
in the registry).

All the Win9x systems have this problem. If you have 1GB of RAM in
Win98, you likely won't be able to use it all because you'll run out
of "resources" before using all the RAM. The WinNT line (WinNT,
Win2000, WinXP) handle things much differently and do not have this
problem.
