We have an old Compaq computer with the win 95
programming.A couple of weeks ago I randomly ran a virus
scanner and it found that I had 5 files with a virus that
was taken out, deleted and accidentally thrown away. Two
of the files were a rundll32.exe file and a( dllreg.exe
specified in the wini.ini.file.)I ran the scandisk and
defragger and compressed everything after this incident
and when I went to restart the computer, everything popped
on the screen but I cannot gain access to anything now
because a window keeps popping up saying that it cannot
find the rundll32.exe file make sure the path direction
and all the components in the library are there.I CAN'T
find the file anywhere.I believe it was one that was
thrown out.I can get into the control panel,my computer
but I can't get access by clicking on the icons.I keep
getting the rundll32.exe warning window mentioned
above. The file, edit, view, favorites, tools and the help at
the top of the pages I can get access to but I cannot go
through my icons and get to the add/remove hardware or
anything else in the control panel or the my comp area.I
did manage to reroute my internet server connection
through the internet connection wizard from the start up
button but I have to download it everytime and give a new
file name everytime I use it.But there are times I can't
always get that too.Could someone please point me a
direction on what to do?If it was a modem problem I would
think that I would not be able to gain any access but I am
computer illiterate to a certain extent or would I need to
reprogram my win 95.We bought this as a used comp and do
not have the programming with it.I would appreciate
someones input very much.Thank you.

Do you have anything on this computer that you really need? If so, you
should start by making backup copies of these files you cannot afford
to lose. Download a Windows Startup Disk, boot the computer with this
Startup disk in drive A:, and then use DOS commands to copy the needed
files to floppy disks. You will probably need help from someone who
understands DOS.
I suggest that you acquire a copy of Windows and use it to reinstall
Windows. You can start by reinstalling on top of the current
installation. If this works, you'll be back in business.
Which copy of Windows to buy depends on what kind of computer you
have. If you have a laptop, consult tech support at the company that
manufactured the computer. If you have a desktop, buy a Microsoft
version of Windows. If the computer has at least 24 MB of RAM and at
least a 1 GB harddisk, buy Windows 98 SE. Otherwise, buy Windows 95.
You can search the Internet for people who are selling these. Some
people are selling OEM versions of Windows, which are cheaper. You can
buy an OEM version if you are willing to take the risk that if
contains moficiations that do not suit your computer, and hence that
you might have to buy another version later.

If you still have a problem with rundll32.exe after removing all traces of the worm, you need to extract a new copy of RUNDLL32.exe from the windows CD. You really need to obtain a copy of the CD for your version of Windows....they are available for sale on EBay and elsewhere online.

Posting this again since my original reply seems to have disappeared from the server:
