trouble accessing a secure site

Today I tried to access a secure site with Netscape 4.79 and
got an empty browser window.  The padlock was locked and,
after 15-20 seconds, the browser said "Document is done".
IE 5.5 did not even claim to make contact with the site, it
just kept a'looking.  There was no message from the site and
no other messages from the browser.

When I telephoned the site, ETrade, their tech department
said to disable my anti-virus and firewall software.  I
didn't.  The tech did verify that the site address was
correct.  He also said that Win95 should be able to access
the site.  I do not have trouble accessing non secure sites,
though I sometimes do get a message about updating my
browser.

My PC is Win95, 166 MHz with 48MB memory.  Dialup internet
connection.  Browsers are Netscape 4.79 and IE 5.5.
AntiVirus is Norton 1998 and the free Grisoft AVG; both are
current.  The firewall is ZoneAlarm 2.6.362.  I believe that
the software is as up-to-date as the operating system and
hardware allows.

It has been a year or more since I tried to access the
site.  Given the huge constraint of old software and
hardware, is there some adjustment that I could make on my
PC?  Or will I have to use the phone for future transactions
on the site?

You may need 128bit encryption to access

Not likely, as they are using IE 5.5
From the page you linked:  "Internet Explorer 5.5 includes 128-bit encryption. If you already have Internet Explorer 5.5 installed, you do not need to upgrade your browser with the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack."

good point...
the only other thing i can think of is the security level may be set too
high
or that site isn't on the "allowed" list

Thanks for the help.

IE is now able to connect with the secure site.  The
solution was to reset everything to the default value.  It
even connects after I select all the non default values that
I wanted.

The Netscape browser still does not connect with the secure
site but will connect with other secure sites.  I checked
all the Preferences, nothing seemed wrong so I left the
settings unchanged.  Maybe the site doesn't work with non
microsoft browsers.
