Reviving a '95pc to get some data of HDD, but initial
boot stops with msg that "Verifying DMI pool data" then,
below that says "I/O error - replace disk and hit enter".

At one time there was a 10/100 NIC in there, but it is no
longer in the unit.  Not sure why.

Tried using the 95 boot disk at startup, but it doesnt
fully load.  States that it is "Starting up Windows 95
with Microsoft info below, but it never starts it up.
Goes directly to directory in A:\ drive.

Either way, would like to revive this to recover data on
HDD.  The pc was in great shape when stopped using it.
Battery still good for configuration purposes.

How do I get past this I/O error and get this thing
booted up.

Thanks so much.

The boot floppy is working properly - it takes you to the DOS prompt so that
you can run whatever procedure you need to use to bring the machine back to
life.

Get some disk drive diagnostics from the www site of the disk drive
manufacturer and use them to diagnose the exact problem with the disk drive.
Check the simple things, such as disk drive configuration in BIOS setup, and
make sure the disk drive cables are firmly connected.

Thanks Jeff:

There are 2 Maxtor HDD's in there.  The primary slave was
partitioned, but that should not affect it.  CAbles are
all connected firmly, but the "Verifying DMI Pool data"
thing has me stumped......

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate your help.  Can you snap your
fingers and make it work??????

as the machine is booting up  hit F5 and see if you can at least get to safe
mode

No, cant get to Safe Mode.  What would I look for in Safe
Mode to reconfigure???  Which HW settings would need to
be changed?     I have no idea, so please advise....
Thanks

With an I/O error

there's a possibility your harddrive is just plain bad

you may be able to go to the mfg's website and download a diagnostic
utility...
of course it could be another hardware problem

Verifying DMI Pool data is part of your PC's Bios and is normal. The info
about "safe mode" is almost correct. to enter "safe mode" begin hitting F8
(about 2x's per second) until you see the "start menu" which at that point
you may hit "safe mode" (usually option number 3). other options to try are
(after booting from floppy) type  sys c: MAKE SURE your bootable floppy is
from the EXACT same version of Win95 as the machine you are working on. DO
NOT use the sys command if you are not absolutely certain it is the same. If
you still have Internet access on another PC read this at Microsoft
