Re-Installation Problem

Oh, what a doozy.  My GF is currently using Windows 95 on
her laptop and wanted to upgrade to ME.  So I tried
running the ME OEM CD but it was not the upgrade version,
but the regular version.  I figured I could install it
anyhow by renaming the windows directory (i know I
know).  It still didn't work.  So I gave up.  It
basically just kept giving the message that an O/S is
already present.  Fair enough.  The problem is all that
messing must have played havoc with the existing Win 95
because now it won't even boot up with the existing
version.  So I tried to reinstall Windows 95 using her
Cabinet files and Setup.  It ran fine but I had a bunch
of files that were newer than the versions to be copied.
The first time through I kept the existing versions.  I
found out later (through the Microsoft Technical Support
database) that this is a common issue and it leads to
problems with the .vxd files.  So I re-installed again
and this time said no, copy over the new versions.

Now i'm getting a message that says Invalid VxD Dynamic
Link Call from IFSMGR(03) + 00010FD to
device "VMM        ", service 1A7.

I skip to the next screen and it states that again this
time with + 000013D8 instead.  If I skip one more time it
states that there is Insufficient Memory to load Windows
and the whole thing shuts down.  I ran through some of
the existing help database stuff on Microsoft relating to
this VxD Dynamic link error but can't seem to figure
things out.  Anyone help out?

I suspect part of the problem is that the computer now
thinks there are bits and pieces of two O/S.  When I
check the config.sys in the root it seems to look ok, the
Himem.sys file existing in my Windows dir..but when I
type in win at the prompt it says it doesn't.

HELP!!

Start the computer, type "edit  c:\msdos.sys" and make sure it
looks something like this:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
BootGUI=1
;end

If this doens't help, please repost with the contents of the
"c:\windows\system\vmm32" directory, including the dates
of the files.
