Have a nasty problem; only one left.
Can't get sound recorder to record from mic,; does weird
things:
1) Hit record (red button), slider JUMPS all the way, no
recording; says "60.0" seconds. If a .wav file is played
before it, only a fraction of the file plays, then stops,
THEN if record is attempted, slider JUMPS all the way
again, but now shows a number of seconds *minus* the
length of the previous .wav file.
"Oscar's sound recorder" (any simple microphone-recording
application) does exactly the same thing. IOW, the
problem isn't in Sound Recorder, but somewhere else.
Have a Creative Labs AWE64 Gold. EVERYTHING else works
fine: CDs play, MIDI keyboard plays, etc. etc..
In Volume control, all sliders (all are present in mine)
work properly except the WAV slider, which shows an
apparently random-height colored band next to the slider.
(Is this a VU meter?)
Checking/unchecking doesn't fix it.
Knowledge base and internet are exhausted; no solution
found.
All drivers are present and in their right places.
The sound card is perfect (the problem existed prior to
its installation anyway).
Reinstalling its drivers doesn't fix it.
All audio CODECs appear to be present; Creative's are NOT
listed (nor needed, apparently).
Uninstalling/reinstalling Sound Recorder doesn't fix it.
I NEED to be able to record voice into the mic on this
machine. I don't NEED Microsoft's Sound Recorder to do
that, but NO sound recorder works; they all do the same
thing.
Playing a large .WAV file through any of them, including
Windows Media Player, produces "stuttering" --bits of
sound come out, separated by pieces of silence.
WMP plays MIDI beautifully.
I am at my wits' end, and dangit, I'm an old electronics
tech.
I _HATE_ sound cards....
Now I'm beginning to hate Sound Recording software, and if
I didn't really NEED to make _basic_ voice .WAV files on
this machine, I wouldn't be in here hunting someone with
an answer. (*grin*)
Can anybody make any suggestions as to where in this W95's
system files I ought to look for a BUG?
Thanks!
(I'll check back in a few days, but I've also left my
email address here in case someone has a great heart and
understands the ugly mood this problem is putting me in...

Check if microphone or anything esle is muted or otherwise disabled, through
yhe following procedure:
Look at the icons beside the time indicator on the rifgt side of the
taskbar.
Uncheck Microphone mute.
Right-click on the speaker icon and choose Open Volume Controls
At the Options menu. choose Properties.
At the "Adjust Volume For..." box, choose Recording and click on OK
Rechoose Properties and check Select at Microphone at the "Show the
following volume controls" box and click on OK and check Select at
Microphone volume control knob in the simulated mixer control.
You may repeat the procedure in order to reselect Playback "in the Adjust
Volume For..." box before closing the Volume Cotrol window.
Sound Recorder has its limitations, in terms of file size and length.

Well, thank you for answering, but this is *nowhere*near*
that simple.
I understand and use *all* of the volume controls and such.
There's nothing wrong with anything I'm using, except the
fact that I can't record *at*all*, with *anybody's* sound
recorder. Windows sound recorder is good for testing; I
have no intention of using it.
Sound *plays* in anybody's recorder (including Windows')
in _burps_ lasting a fraction of a second. Re-clicking on
play gets another _burp_ of sound, from the same file.
(Starts and stops, IOW.) Any software sound recorder I
try does exactly the same thing.
Something's bad wrong somewhere; I just have tried
*everything* I can think of, and have come up empty.
Any suggestions regarding some *serious* troubleshooting,
in Windows' system collection of softwares?
I mean, thanks anyway, but this is going to take a really
deep dig into what might be wrong; I am an ex-electronics
technician, and have been using computers since 1976
(Apple II). Trust me: I probably know as much as anyone
here; I'm just hoping against hope that someone has had
this particular problem before, and knows how to fix it.
