I have a HP3100 with Win95. It has a USB port on the back
and claims to be P&P. (State of the art, under a grand, in
Dec. of '97.) I had attempted to install the current Turbo
Tax. I was prompted about a couple of missing .dll
files. I downloaded a couple of .dll files from the net
and installed them on the computer. The second
download 'didn't take'. I can't remember the exact error
message, but it was something like 'this file is linked to
a missing...' or something like that. Anyway, I got
frustrated, and went to the MS Win95 download page and
started downloading just about everything there.
The computer went from bad to worse. I now am getting a
blue screen error message just about every keystroke. It
says, "An exception OE has occurered at 0028:C027F28A in
VxD VFBACKUP(03) + 0000141E. This was called from
0028:C023C5A1 in VxD VMM(12) + 000005A1. It may be
possible to continue normally. *Press any key to attempt
to continue, etc., etc."
At this point, I'm just trying to save about 250 MB of
files and don't really want to reformat and reinstall, but
it looks like I may have to do that and lose the files.
In searching for ways to save the files (flash drives, USB
data transfer cables, installing a CD burner), I've seen
that Win95 OSR2 is supposed to have more USB function than
Win95. It also appears that there's more stuff compatible
with Win95 OSR2 than with plain old Win95.
Is it possible to upgrade from Win95 to Win95 OSR2, after
I get my immediate problem fixed, and any suggestions on
how to fix my immediate problem?
Thanks! -David

Win95A does not have USB support at all. And upgrading from A to B is not
officially supported (though it can be done).
We need to save your files, first, before anything else. If you can boot
into Safe Mode (hit F8 during the boot process, and it should get you a menu
where Safe Mode is an option), you'll be able to get far enough into the
system to do a few things:
1) remove turbo_tax via add_remove programs
2) remove everything else you've added recently from the MS web site via
add_remove programs (hot fixes, service packs, what-not)
3) use SYSEDIT to remark (REM) any entries in AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS (don't delete them, because we'll need to put them back later)
5) delete any icons in the startup folder under the Start button
4) scandisk and defrag
Do all this and a regular reboot should get you back to a pretty normal
working system. Then we can worry about updates and upgrades.
