I wonder if anyone can help with a small problem that is
driving me mad!
I am building a second PC (just for and old accounting
software and word processing) with components left over
after several upgrades. All these worked ok when last
used but not necessarily with each other.
This is based on an Elite K7S5A Motherboard, Duron 800MHz
and 128MB PC100 Ram. It has a CD WR and a 4GB HDD with
the usual Floppy. I have also tried 256MB PC133 Ram with
the same problems. I have used Fdsik and formatted OK and
scandisk tells me there are no errors on drives C or D.
I am having extreme difficulties loading an operating
system (have tried 95,98 or XP). During loading setup
could not find some files on the Windows95 CD
(msjtick.drv - vjoyd.vxd - msmpu 401.drv and msmpu
401.vxd )
I have managed to load 95 after a number of attempts but
now I can only boot into Safe Mode for a few seconds then
I keep getting a Blue screen with various error messages
including "A fatal error has occurred :xxxxxxxin VXD VMM
(01) +00003AF. The current application will be terminated"
Can anyone help please please please??

What version of Windows 95 are you trying to install?
Those files exist in the CAB files on the CD in Win95B and C (OSR2x), but I can't say offhand if they are in the original version of Win95....they exist in the CABS on the Win98 CD also. The files are part of the audio driver setup....I believe that motherboard has integrated audio, does it not?
Do you have a sound card installed, or are you using the integrated audio? If a sound card, have you disabled the integrated audio, in the BIOS setup?
Try ignoring the audio device during setup...tell Windows you don't have one. hen install the audio drivers from within Windows after the installation is complete. You will first have to install any motherboard/chipset drivers from the motherboard CD. The audio drivers for integrated sound may also be on the mobo CD....AC97 drivers.
Have you tried copying the Win95 or Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive, and then running Windows setup from there, rather than from the CD?

1st problem that comes to mind is that you need to clean your media and
drives.
Second, since this is a "zombie" box, you need to run a burn-in diaglostic
to see if all the parts are happy together. I use CheckIt anmd QuickTechPro
2000.
3rd thing is that you have a bunch of components that W95 didn't have
drivers for, and subsequently were never developed. 98 or 2000 mighjt be
the way to go on this box.
