A co-workers laptop has an annoying problem.

Every hour or so the floppy drive checks it's contents.
You can hear it searching, just as when you open A drive
and there's no disc in the drive. There is no pop up
window or any message when this happens.

What could be causing this and how could it be fixed
(stopped).

Check his anti-virus software settings. It could be set to check all drives,
including floppies.
