My 80 year mother has a computer with Windows 95 (not
sure of the version) and wants to connect to broadband.
Dial up is too slow and boring she says. Her ISP suggests
that the minimum desirable requirements are Windows 98.
Is it possible to rum broadband satisfactorilly with
Windows 95?
cheers

Short answer ... Yes

My system is dual boot w/ Win95a and WinNT. Win95 runs IExplorer 5.5 and
WinNT runs IExplorer 6, Opera, and several versions of Netscape. I use
Comcast broadband and there is no discernable performance difference between
Win95 and WinNT.

The only caveats are that Win95 will only run IExplorer 5.5 (not later
versions) and Zone Alarm doesn't support Win95 any longer. These
limititations (along w/ marginal hardware, re old hardware) are what
prompted me to convert to WinNT, leaving Win95 as a backup OS. If you can
live w/ these limitations (by finding alternative software) then Win95 will
talk to broadband capably.

Live long, and prosper

But the latest, most up-to-date versions of Mozilla and Netscape will
work. (But not FireFox.)

I beg to differ.  I am running Mozilla Firefox 0.8 on my Windows 95b machine,
and it works perfectly.

I'm delighted to know that! Their "System Requirements" page lists
Win98 and Win98SE, but not Win95, and that's what I was going by. I
wonder whether there's anything at all in FireFox that won't work
properly in Win95?

I have 1/2 dozen win95 machines on DSL here no prob.

1. must install network card ..be sure you have win95 drivers.

2. should have updated browser IE5.5sp2 is last one for win95.
http://browsers.evolt.org/   (big download)

3. recommend a firewall and updated antivirus programs.

4. you may want to look at a bit more RAM if you are on the low side 16-24
mb  ..32 mb would be nice

Planning on reformatting a Win95 machine.  I found the update to Win95a, but that only supports 16bit, correct?  According to this site then, the highest I can go is IE4, correct?

Win95a supports the FAT16 file system, but not the FAT32 file system,
so you'll be limited to 2.1GB partitions.

You can run IE5.5SP2 on Win95. That can be obtained here:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit

You can also run the most up-to-date releases from Netscape, Mozilla
and Mozilla Firefox (according to Michael Meyers, although the Firefox
page calls for Win98).

Darn! Beat me by 9 minutes.
I knew I should have uploaded before reading the rest of the messages!

Thank You! ...... for some reason I was left with the impression (something on the download site?) that listed only IE4 for 16 bit systems but this is nice to know!

95a supports the FAT16 file system, but not FAT32. Nothing to do
with 16- or 32- bit programs.

Incorrect.
IE5.5sp2 will work fine (just like on this 95a system I'm using right now).

Here's my standard download list as well...

The 84MB "self-extracting archive" method:

Assorted IE versions:
 http://cws.internet.com/ie.html
 http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
 ftp://ftp.skynet.be/mirror/microsoft.com/ie/
 http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie
 http://www2.kansas.net/download.asp

IE 5.5 & 6.0 only:
 http://www.it.utep.edu/wksupport/applications.html

No longer available here, but here's the old link:
 http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html

After downloading, double-click on the 84MB file. It should
automatically create a new sub-folder under its current location
called "IE 5.5 SP2 Full", and auto-extract yet another 84MB of
CAB files and a few EXEs into it. To install, go into the new
sub-folder and run ie5setup.exe

---

Apparently this works too, though I haven't tried it.....

thank you too!  It's nice to have confirmation! ;-)  I don't care if it was a minute off or so! LOL
(and ....... as you can tell....... I get confused easily! <G>.....)
Jumping around from one thing to the next too fast!!!

This computer is WinMe - just trying to clean out/up an older one but want to make it as current as possible without any extra money.  Trying to get my ducks in a row before I start!  That one is not connected - so will burn to a CD........

I finally switched to broadband when running Win95B with USB support after I
found out that the only reason that Win98 was "required" was that it had
better USB support.  Most cable modems have the option of connecting thru
USB or nic; on Win95 you should connect thru a nic.

Haggis has some good suggestions, although nice, I'm not sure they're
necessary.

Get a nic, hook up and go from there.

Enjoy
Tom
