Our old IBM PC running Win 95 boots up and then goes into a system halt mode. The message displayed reads "Windows has disabled direct disk access to protect your long filenames. To overide this protection, see the LOCK /? command for more information
The system has been halted. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart your computer.
Upon restarting, I get back to the same screen. I can't figure out how to even get to a DOS screen
I found a related article (KB142189) which refers to the UNDELETE command and long file names. My concern is the potential of corrupting or losing files
How can clear up this problem and restore normal operation? The problem started after some security settings for online banking were modified.

Start your computer in Safe mode:
Hit the F8 key when you see the 'Starting Windows 95....' text message on your screen, to bring up the Windows 95 Startup Menu (boot menu).
Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode", and press Enter.

In Safe Mode, open c:\autoexec.bat with Notepad and post back with what commands are listed there.

Also look at the run= and load= lines in c:\windows\win.ini, after opening it with Notepad, and post back with what is there.....usually they are blank, but sometimes contain a command.

Thanks for your response.
I get the following:
c:\>autoexec.bat
Locking operation failed

Rapid Resume scanning Drive C:

Error allocating disk space for Rapid Resume.
Locking operation failed.

I am unable to display any win.ini information. Any
combination of entries resulted in:
Bad command or file name

Will keep trying.

Are you following the instructions I posted?
Are you in Safe Mode?
It appears you are executing the autoexec.bat file, rather than opening it USING NOTEPAD, in Safe Mode.

From the error you receive, I am guessing you are using an IBM Aptiva computer....
follow the instructions on this page to disable Rapid Resume:
http://members.aol.com/don5408/win98/win98_and_rr.html

This simpler method may also work for you, depending on the model Aptiva you have.
from http://support.radioshack.com/support_computer/doc17/17618.htm :

"When the computer is rebooted, hold down both the left and right mouse
button.  This will allow you to regain control of the computer.  Enter
setup, select Rapid Resume, and toggle the switch to enable or disable the
feature.  Selecting the enable will keep the Rapid Resume on, selecting
disable will turn it off."
