I can boot up and run msdos and windows in
safe mode, but when I try to run real win95 (my old version)
it starts to load windows drivers then quits with error
msg: "while initializing device CONFIGMG: windows
protection error.  you need to restart your computer."
any suggestions?

This error condition normally occurs during setup, not during execution. In
those cases, it is because of a BIOS incompatibility. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=187612

Resolving it for you otherwise, I think we need more history of the problem.
Was Win95 working fine in the past and just stopped working recently? What
did you change just before this happened? Software installed, removed,
engaged, reconfigured? OS reconfigures? Hardare changes (less likely)?
Windows Updates applied?

That will give us the clue on how to proceed.
