Dear Helpful Individual,

Still a novice at age 66 with my first computer and still Windows95.
I'm getting an error message stating "URLMON.DLL" has caused an error.  As I
don't know what "URLMON.DLL is, I went into a search engine and entered
"URLMON.DLL" hoping it would tell me.  It didn't.  However, it showed me
there is a diagnostic tool..."PcDocRx OnCall" available for DLL problems.
Two questions:
1) What may be causing the error message regarding "URLMON.DLL?
2) Would you suggest it would be safe to use the above mentioned diagnostic
tool?
Thank you,
David

This is a component of Internet Explorer. What version of the IE browser are
you running? (If you don't know, go to http://aumha.org/mydetail.htm and
copy off the screen the information that it gives about your computer, and
paste the information into your response here.)

Usually a repair reinstall of IE solves this. I'll wait for your response on
version before going into details.

if you have not done so ...go to

control panel > add/remove items> select internet explorer and it should
give an option to repair or remove...choose repair , reboot and see if it
helps...

If you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and post back with the EXACT details word for word, up to but not including the memory registers, and when it is occurring.  What programs are open and what are you doing.

I would forget about the "diagnostic" program....most "find" all sorts of non-existent things but won't offer to fix them unless you pay.

Here's the info you requested.  This occurs when I'm on various websites.
I'm
connected to the internet via Road Runner cable modem.
   Websearch
This program has performed an illegal operation
       and  will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program
       vendor.

WEBSEARCH caused an invalid page fault in
module URLMON.DLL at 015 : 7029e7db.
Registers: various numbers you state you don't need.

The following is information regarding my computer:
   Microsoft Windows95
   4.00.950 B

When I click on "Help" and then Click on "About Internet Explorer" I find
the following:
   IE Version: 5.50.4134.0600CO
   Cipher Strength: 128-bit
   Product ID: 52974-520-3494537-04381
   Update Versions: q269368
This is a customized version of Internet Explorer

Thank you for your advice on that "diagnostic" program.

If you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button,
and post back with the EXACT details word for word, up to but not including
the memory registers, and when it is occurring.  What programs are open and
what are you doing.

Ahhh, WEBSEARCH.  Your search page has apparently been hijacked by this unsavory app, and it is probably the cause of your error messages.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

If you find WebSearch in Control Panel> Add\Remove Programs, select and uninstall it.

Read here:
http://doxdesk.com/parasite/CoolWebSearch.html
and
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool, available here:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.
Ad-Aware:

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only.
SpyBot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder,  doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished,  the  "Scan"  button will change into a "Save Log"  button.
Press that,  save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums:

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

And additionally, you're running Hotbar. Get rid of it! Go to the "Fighting
Parasite" link in my signature and do the "Quick Fix" steps at the bottom of
the page. This is important! HotBar and WebSearch are causing your
problems - and they may have brought their friends!

Thank you all (Eshelman, glee, Haggis, J.S.Sigler).  The giving of your time
and the sharing of your knowledge is appreciated more than a "thank you" can
express!  I'll let you all know how this and a couple of other problems turn
out after sorting out all your instructions.

The URLMON.dll file is normally installed with Windows, but can be
removed if Internet Explorer is removed. Re-installing the browser can
bring the file back.

My suggestion would be to update to, or reinstall, Internet Explorer
to 5.5 with service pack 2 (sp2). It's the latest Internet Explorer
for Windows 95.

Microsoft doesn't have it for download anymore but evolt.org does,
although it wouldn't install for me after wasting hours getting it do
download!

Against my better judgment I checked with on-disk.com as a Microsoft
guru in this news group recommended and got the full install version
of Internet Explorer 5.5 SP (service pack 2). To my surprise it
installed perfectly and is running great on both Windows ME and
Windows 95. You can find it at http://www.on-disk.com/ie55sp2.html
