A few months ago I downloaded a free program called
weatherbug which was included in an aquarium screen
saver.  I did not like the weatherbug so I uninstalled
it.  Right after that my system started "hanging up" every
5 minutes or so.  If I keep the mouse moving back and
forth it releases the "hang" in a minute. It "hangs" no
matter which program I am using, but is worse when I am
online using IE 5.5 or outlook express. Now, just in the
last few days, the computer has a new problem - it is not
able to complete the shutdown process.  It boots up just
fine, but when I go to shutdown it does one of two
things.  1. It acts like I did a soft boot, and shuts down
and restarts itself again.  or 2. It gets to the stage
where it tells me to please wait while it shuts down and
then it just sits there and goes no further.  So I
manually shut it off, which I know is not good for the
machine.  Any suggestions?

Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download the free version of Ad-Aware.   Run
this program to clean out a malware and spyware programs.
Post back if that does not solve your problems and you will get a few more
tips.
Shut down problems can be many and varied, so give as much information about
your hardware and software as you can.

I have gone to www.lavasoftusa.com and they say the free
version only works on Win 98 and above.  Do you think it
will work on Win 95?

AdAware will run on Windows 95b.  Works fine for me.

In their FAQ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/faq/
under compatibility -

Q: What platforms is Ad-aware compatible with?
A: Ad-aware is compatible with Windows? 98, 2000, NT40, XP and ME.

So I would presume that it applied to all versions of their software.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool, available here:

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only.
