What do these error messages mean?

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:00000392

General protection fault in Module GDI.EXE @0001:000065fa

These messages occur at various applications and
sometimes it is difficult to shut down the system.

This tells us that there is a problem with memory processing at a point in
time that a driver was being used. It often means a problem with the driver,
but may only mean that the driver is what had Windows' attention when
something else went wrong.

This is a reference to the module that handles most of the graphical
elements. Together they *might* mean a video driver problem, but that would
be jumping to a conclusion that isn't fully justified. Some examples of
specialized situations where this second one appears are:

The history and exact scenarios would help in this case. I suspect one of
two things is true. Either we need more information to let history and
situation help us identify the problem, for which I recommend the
"Troubleshooting" article listed in my signature. Even more likely and
perhaps productively, I suspect your computer system is a bit congested
overall and some general cleaning and polishing will help. Therefore, I
suggest you start with the "Computer Health" article in my sig - go through
*all* of the steps listed - and see if this reduces or resolves the problem.
If not, then go to the "Troubleshooting Windows" article, follow out the
steps, and provide us the additional information that it requests.
