My friend is running a Win95 machine and started to get
lots of strange things happening. So he downloaded Grisoft
Virus Checker (as it was reccommended here) and got rid of
11 trojans. As part of the clean-up he also defragged the
hard-drive.

When he next went to use the system... it loaded to the
page where he is asked for his password. If he then types
his password, it starts up correctly, and loads too... but
then a few seconds later is automatically restarts. So he
can't get into his own area.

If he hits cancel on the password screen its all loads up,
but he can't get to his area - where all his setting are.

He did boot it up is SafeMode and unistall Grisoft Virus
Checker, but that made no difference.

Any suggestions on how he can get back to his own area -
or why it reboots if he tries????

Thanks,

Cinabar

Question, when you say that it "automatically restarts" do you mean the
computer or that you are redirected back to the logon box? If you mean that
it actually "reboots" do you mean that it actually "reboots" and then comes
back to the logon box? And one final question, when you boot in safe mode
does the system require you to "logon" or not? This corresponds to a line in
the msdos.sys file       network=1     if it is not there put it there
(below one of the other items) (remember to have the read only box unchecked
before resaving and then recheck after saving) Then try to logon in "safe
mode with network support" usually option number 4. if you can logon let me
know and I will direct you to the likely culprit (string) in the registry!
