I received an email from
"Microsoft" (security@microsoft.com) that says:

Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!

There is an attachment that says" patch.exe  (9.37kb)

Is this a virus?  Or is Microsoft trying to send me help
for my  windows 95 version?

Yes, it is a virus.   Microsoft does not send email to strangers, with or
without a patch.

Virus!  do not open the attachment!
Delete the entire email.  MS does not ever email updates or patches.
