I'm wondering if my machine is upgradeable from Windows 95
Plus! to Windows 98 SE?  It's an ancient Gateway 2000
boatanchor originally running Windows 3.1 that I updated,
and seems pretty fast with the version of Windows 95 I
have on it. The specifications of my system are: 192 MB
RAM, 256K cache, AMD 5x86-133 processor running at 160
mHz, 10 GB hard disk, 16x CD-RW, dual 5.25"/3.5" floppy
disk drive, zip drive, 4 port USB 2.0 card, PS/2 mouse
port, Packard Bell Sound Card/14.4k Modem, Packard Bell FM
tuner, ATI "All In Wonder" cable-ready 128 bit video card,
and a 56K V.92 LT WinModem. Does this machine, assembled
from parts found at a thrift store for under $20, seem
worth upgrading? Any input is appreciated.

Also, my monitor  (older than the computer - dated 1990)
was designed for 640x480, and when I set it at 800x600 I
get a poor image that makes my eyes hurt. Is there a way,
short of buying a new monitor, that I can set the size at
600x800 amd get a decent image?

Regards,

Tim

Though that machine will certainly not be winning any races, it will run
Win98 just fine. I've seen a number of Pentium-133 machines running Win98
with less RAM than that, and the users are quite comfy with it.

It's possible that a better driver will help, but you may just want to use
it at the lower resolution or get a new monitor.

You can buy a Win98 or Win98SE upgrade disk. Check eBay or a larger
retailer. The upgrade cannot be downloaded!
