So I went to Bootdisk.com and downloaded an .exe file, that says it is a
boot disk.   I used PKUNZIP to unzip it, and it became a very large file,
with extension .IMA or something.    I then copied the file to a floppy,
where it did nothing.   Obviously I am doing something wrong.   What might I

Run the exe as you would any program and it will make a bootable floppy.
Don't try to unzip it.

I have to MAKE  the boot disk on a good, unbroken computer, running it from
the <start> <run> menu in Windows, with a clean floppy in drive A?

The bootdisk exe you downloaded, when run, will extract the needed files to
a floppy disk and the floppy disk will then have the needed files on it o be
bootable. Running the exe from "Start > Run is fine". Or is there some
reason you can't run the exe? If you would like me to make a zip file of the
contents of a boot disk and email it to you, I can. Just tell me which
bootdisk you need. You would then only have to unzip the archive to a blank
floppy and then test it by booting up with the floppy in the drive.
