is win95 freeware?

Hello,

as far as I know, Windows 95 is regarded as not further supported OS. Is it
possible to install it freely on old machines, or is that prohibited.

PS: Actually I need only to have an rtf editor, which unfortunately does not
exist under DOS.

No, Microsoft just doesn't work that way. Neither Win95 nor any other
MS OS can be had for free, and that will probably never change.
