Really elementary question:

I want to be able to click on an icon on the desktop and transfer a file
from directory "C:\a\b" to drive "e".

I know this may have something to do with a batch file, but I don't know
exactly how to do it.

Could someone please explain this in elementary terms?

Thanks

put this line in notepad

xcopy c:\file.xxx  e:\destination

changes the names accordingly and save the file with a " .bat" extension

then make a shorcut to the desktop for it

Thanks for the response:

Here is the file I named "test.bat" to transfer mm.doc from one file to
another as a test:

xcopy c:\data\word\files\mm.doc c:\data\download\mm.doc

I double click on test.bat to execute it.  I keep getting the error message:

"C:\data\download>gibberish
Bad command or file name"

What on earth am I doing wrong.  (maybe I shouldn't have typed the program
in "Word")

I can make it work in the command prompt, but not as a program.

Exactly!
Use notepad, it saves the file as unformatted text as the command
interpreter (command.com or cmd.exe) expects it to be.
