Hi there,

I have a windows 95 computer, and would like to launch a
couple of programs from the taskbar instead of from the
icon on the desktop.

Is that possible with that version?

Thanks,

Jackie

By "taskbar" are you referring to the Quick Launch bar? This is controlled
by the version of IE you have, not by the version of Windows; and, yes, you
can almost certainly drag a shortcut of just about anything ot the Quick
Launch bar.

Hey Jim,

I am not finding IE 5.5 icon on the desktop can be
dragged onto the taskbar for quick launch. I checked out
IE 6 to see what version of Windows it requires, and it
cannot be run from Windows 95.  It seems then that the
version of Windows does make a difference.

If there is another way to use quick launch for IE 5.5
and it's Outlook Express, that advise would be
appreciated.

I do not see anything in your post that confirms that you actually have
the Quick Launch Bar installed.

If this is a true deduction on my part,
then enable / disable the Quick Launch Bar by following these steps.

Right-click on a blank area of the Taskbar.
Move the mouse to Toolbars to display the sub-menu
Check / uncheck "Quick Launch" to enable / disable the Quick Launch Bar.

The Quick Launch Bar was first introduced with Internet Explorer 4.01,
but it is actually an extension of the Start Button, making it a part of Windows.

Jackie, do you have the QuickLaunch toolbar enabled? Right-click on an empty
part of your toolbar, click on Toolbars, and make sure there is a check next
to QuickLaunch.

On the Windows 95 taskbar, there is no option for
QuickLaunch, only the clock, whether it shows, and the
start menu options.

By default, no.  You need at least MSIE 4.01,
AND you need to install the Quick Launch bar.

You don't seem to have ever installed IE4 and added the Active
Desktop.

How to Install the Windows Desktop Update with Internet Explorer 5.x

Try this old response:

There is a method outlined in a post by Bill James MVP
----quote
I have successfully used this method with ~10 computers, and it has
worked for others also.

 A. In the same folder as ie5setup.exe, create a new shortcut with
     the appropriate line shown below.

    For NT 4.0:    ie5setup.exe /c:" ie5wzd /E:IE4Shell_NTx86"
    For Win9x:    ie5setup.exe /c:" ie5wzd /E:IE4Shell_WIN"

 B. Choose the Custom Install option, and select the Browser to
reinstall it at the same time.  IE5Setup should connect and
download the Active Desktop option, then install it.

Please note that none of these methods is supported by Microsoft,
whose official position is that you must uninstall IE5, reinstall IE4
(unless you reverted to it when you uninstalled IE5), add Active
Desktop, then reinstall IE5.

I make no warrantee and accept no responsibility for use of these
methods.
