I have a stand alone PC running Windows 95 and need to
upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP.  What are my options, are
there any hardware requirement/compatibility implications?

There are certainly hardware compatibility implications. A computer
that's old enough to be running Win95 is unlikely to have the
horsepower to run WinXP, also it's unlikely that XP-compatible drivers
will exist for the hardware. Look here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
for the XP upgrade advisor, which will tell you whether you computere
can handle XP.
