I have a 1997 Gateway 2000 that has Windows 95 on it.
Today after I started it up, I heard some loud clicking
from the tower, then later got a message that said to
write down the information, and contact Microsoft.
Here's what I wrote down.

Expression: Get_cStart (&de, dr) == cSource
Source: line 1785 of scan.c

Now, it will not boot up at all without going through a
full Surface Scan, and will not even get through that.  I
don't really have any vital data on this computer, should
I try to get it fixed, or is it even worth the trouble at
this point.  Thanks for any advice.

All you can do is throw in a new hard drive.
Staples has a 30 GB for $30 after rebate.

It may have a failing hard drive.
Download the diagnostics for your brand drive.

If you do not know the brand, download Seagate SeaTools.  After it is downloaded, double-click it, and it will create a bootable floppy disk with the diagnostic program on it.  Then boot your problem computer using the bootable floppy, and choose the Generic long test.  It will create a report that you can read from within the program when the tests are complete, and it is also saved as a text file on the floppy disk.

Alternately, you can use the evaluation version of Ontrack Data Advisor, which is the same program in its original version.  They both are created the same way.

Seagate SeaTools:

Data Advisor:

The download link has not been working recently...if it does not connect, use Seagate SeaTools instead.
