Help with several problems

Older Dell GXMT 5200, Pentium, 200mhz with floppy, CD-ROM, 2Gig HD utilizing
Win95 as the OS.

Became infected with Startpage.DM trojan (in soundmx.exe file) which I
removed.

Apparently, this removal fouled up the registry and I do not have a good
backup.

Now, when trying to go into Safe Mode, I get the notice about the registry
and must reboot.  And, on certain websites I get a "This program has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.  If the problem
persists...."

Details follow:

"DDHELP caused a general protection fault in moduel GDI..EXE at
000Z:0000003f.
Registers:
EAX=990000 CS=0427 KIP=0000003f KFLGS=00000286... "
etc.

Is there a solution other than reformatting and reinstalling Win95?

If reformatting and reinstalling is required, is there a really good,
step-by-step guide for doing this?

Sincerely appreciate your help!!!

I had the same problem ........ i used the program reg cleaner to remove
this registry entry from my start up list in the registry ....i'm sure
you could use reg edit ........you would be looking for something along
the lines as soundmx.exe HKEY_LM\run .   Better check with one of the
regulars here though .

If you are getting a registry error whenever you try to enter Safe Mode, you may have defective memory (RAM).
Have your RAM tested, or try this software tester, following the instuctions on the web site:
DocMemory
http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp

For the DDHELP error, see if anything here helps:
http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/ddhelp.htm
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=286006

You don't say what web sites give the error, but you may need to update your display driver from the video card manufacturer's web site.
Reinstalling DirectX may help also.

Glen:

The simmtest did not indicate any hardware problem.

Because the system was running so slow both before and after testing, I
decided to try to do a clean install.  I fdisked and formated the C drive
and then attempted to install Win95 from CD.

During the install, when "Copying Files", I get the following error:

"The file 'arp.exe' on Windows 95 CD-ROM could not be found.  Setup could
not find a file on the specified path (D:WIN95).  If the path appears below,
make sure it is correct.  Click OK to try copying again."  ***Tried this,
got the same message.***  So..., I selected the 'Skip File' option to move
on to the next screen.

The next screen was the same message for the file 'elnk3.dos', and this
continued thru another 37 file names.  I did do a search of the CD in an
effort to locate them.

Of course, there are several functions which will not work properly --- I
haven't made notes of which ones (thinking I can do this if necessary for
you to help me).

Are you able to tell me where to find the files which were not found on the
Win95 CD?

Sure do appreciate your help!!!

The two  files you mention are on the Windows CD, inside the .cab files.
I don't know why Windows setup would not be able to find them, as setup automatically looks inside the .cab files.

The files you mentioned are dial-up and networking files...perhaps if you list all the missing files, we could better help.

You might try copying the Windows setup files (from the Win98 folder on the CD) to a folder on the hard drive, and install Windows from that location instead of directly from the CD.

Glen:

Thank you for all your trouble.  I copied the all the Win95 files from the
CD-ROM to the C:\WIN95 folder.  Since then, I have been able to connect to
the internet pretty well.  I do get a message about being unable to find the
DHCP program, but that does not seem to be a problem.

The menu bar does not have a Tools menu.  Are you able to guide me in how I
may restore that and its options?

Again, thank you for all your help.

What exactly is the message re: DHCP that you are receiving?

If you don't have a Tools menu in Windows Explorer, look for the Folder Options item on the View menu instead  (I am assuming that you are referring to Windows Explorer).

Glen:

Can't seem to get the DHCP error message to display now - wonder why that
is.

The Tools menu I am referring to is the one in Internet Explorer that
contains Internet Options, etc.  I am sure it was there at one time, but not
now.

Best to you!

And thanks some more!!!

Start> Settings> Control Panel> Internet Options:
does it work, and are all the tabs and buttons there, and also working?
Can you perform all operations there, such as changing the Home Page?

If so, try doing a Repair of IE to bring back the Tools menu.
Click Start>Run, type the following and click Enter (assuming you have IE5.x):
RUNDLL32  SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance

Choose the Repair option, and continue.

If the repair says it cannot complete, or it does not fix the problem, or if you
cannot boot to Safe Mode, reinstall Internet Explorer, following the procedures at
this link:

Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98:
http://tinyurl.com/r5ba

If the Internet Options control panel is missing, or some items don't work, we may
have to add another procedure or two to try and get it back.

Glen:

Before proceeding further, I want to let you know there is NO "Internet
Options" selection in the Control Panel (there is only an "Internet" option
in which the Advanced tab does not include any references to Tools or
scripts or debugging.)

The version of IE is 3.0 (4.70.1158)  Could this be part of the problem?

I will await your further guidance.

Thanks a lot.

Glen, thank you very much for all your help.

I happen to have a CD with IE 5.5 on it, so... I installed it.  The machine
seems to be working great now.

The time you take, and the knowledge you bring to help, cannot be
appreciated enough.

Sincerely,

Nels
