I hear that you can run Windows on Ubuntu using a VM. Have you tried
this? If so how well did it work?

Many, many people do this. It works just fine, assuming your machine
is at least moderately recent. (Older machines will run s-l-o-o-o-w.)
However, I'd use something besides Ubuntu, but that's just a "personal
preference" thing. (Slackware rocks. Use it.)

"TIA" means "thanks in advance". Chances are it's not the OP's name.

Office 97 isn't supposed to change the startup sound -- in theory.
It's never done it to me, and I still use it on some machines.

Yeah, that's the best solution.
Problem: Startup sound has been changed.
Solution: Change to a different operating system.
Can you spot the flaw in your logic?

Ubuntu devotees are like Republicans and a tax cut: It fixes the economy,
cures cancer, and relives the pain from bee-bites. There is a difference, of
course: with tax cuts, it's true.

Yep, we can see that right now. LOL.
