Windows Forum / Windows 95 / May 2008help in startup

Could you post back with the model fo your computer please? You have not given much info...but it seems not to be detecting your harddrive. If that's the case you'd need to go into the bios and see if it's detected. Many machines require you to hit the <delete> key to do so but it can vary. Also, do you see a message such as "Hit <del>" to enter setup ? It appears that your machine has reverted to its default BIOS setup, possibly because of a flat battery, and the default requires you to enter a password before the machine will boot. Unless someone has been fiddling with the system, this password will be the default. You can google using the machine or motherboard brand name and "BIOS password" and probably find the default, or you can search for the original documentation and it may be listed there. I assumed that since you could post messages to this message board then you had internet access to do a Google search. If that's not so, it's going to be tricky. Do you have the original documentation provided with the machine? The battery I'm referring to is a small low-voltage battery that maintains power to the memory that holds the BIOS settings. When it goes flat the BIOS forgets its settings and reverts to its default, which in your case appears to be to require a password. The password is requires is usually very obvious. Have you tried FN-F2? If you type other characters, do they appear over that key symbol, or do asterisks or similar appear over the key? The key symbol tells me the machine is locked for some reason, and that in turn leads me to guess that the BIOS password is active, and that could happen if the BIOS backup battery has gone flat and the default mode of operation for that BIOS is to require a password. That's quite a string of maybes, and you need some proper documentation for the machine in order to confirm them. If the battery is flat then it needs to be replaced, but that doesn't help you since you will still need to get past the password (if that's the problem). Here's one from left field - some systems will not boot if the case is open. If this was the problem you would be able to see one or more small switches mounted near the lid or removable panel with wires leading back to the motherboard. Other than that, it's a matter of finding someone familiar with that particular machine. How to fix it - you have two problems (three if it's an obscure sort): 1. You have to figure out how to open it up to find where the cell in question is. (The 'net may help, but you probably need a service manual, which are often not as freely available as ordinary manuals.) Just hope it's not soldered in when you get there ... 2. As Jeff has said, you need the password even after you've replaced the battery (probably a cell actually). Unless you're lucky and it only defaults to needing the password when the cell is flat - or there's a link on the board that lets you in. SignatureJ. P.
