I have an old laptop compaq computer, I am runnign windows
95. When I turn on the computer I get an error message
(device IOS error comes up. An I/O subsystem driver failed
in the ./ ios subsystem subdirectory is corrupt, or the
system is low on memory. If I hit ctrl alt delete it
brings up the windows start up. When I click on the step-
by-step conformation I go through the steps but can't seem
to find out what the problem is.

Windows 95 May Fail to Boot Due to I/O Subsystem Failure
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=225497
Click Start>Run, type system.ini and click OK.
Scroll through the file till you find the heading
[vcache]
Immediately under that heading, add or modify this line to read:
MaxFileCachea44
Close the file and save the changes when prompted.
Reboot.

Do you have an antivirus installed? Some older versions of McAfee used to
do this to Win95 all the time.
