Hello,
I hope this is the right NG for this question:
I need to xfer the files from my win98 system to the new
xpPro one. I have a parallel file xfer cable that I know
works however win 98 & XP can't seem to talk to each
other.
I setup the win98 system as host on direct cable
xfer/parallel option and on xp system ran new connection
wiz to specify the same but when the xp connection is
selected XP verifies login/pwd for some reason then waits
awhile and then says the remote is not responding.
I have read MS Help info that says that I must
have "Client for Microsoft Networks protocol and the File
and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks protocol
installed on both computers". The problem is I have been
unable to find the above for win98 anywhere.
Does anyone know a different work-around to get my
systems connected or how to find the software? There is
no network card in the win98 system.
Thanx in advance,
Larry

PS: I have already tried LapLink's online version and
FileVan but they can't do what I want.

Set your towers side by side with the cases open. Remove the ribbon
cable from your CDRom (and any other device) on the new PC and attach it
to the hard drive of the old one. Note the position of the colored
strip on the ribbon cable so you hook it up properly. Leave the power
cables in place. Power both machines up and use Explorer to transfer
the files.

Larry,
Look in Networking-TCP/IP Properties in the Control
Panel. You'll need to share the drive on the win98 system
too.
Good luck.
