I understand that I can run the( windows ME (XP upgrade) CD over Win98SE. I
know that I will lose 98 operating system , but I have the Win98 CD so I can
reload win98 if I mess up the the upgrade. I have copied  files to an
external hard drive. Assuming I run the upgrade properly. Will this approach
produce XP on my hard drive?

Yes, it will assuming all the applications are compatible with XP as well as
all your devices.

Make sure you have the product key for win98 before starting. It is easy to
obtain if the system is installed. Once upgraded it cannot be obtained
anymore.

Just insert the XP CD while running win98 and start setup.

It is always a good idea to have backup of important data you do not want to
loose. There are no guarantees

I neglected to mention that the external Hard Drive
is on my system , it is [ G:]. Will the files I copied to it be lost when I
load XP?
