Secondary IDE can't be fixed

I've been trying to fix my CD-ROM drive now for a month,
but nothing works. As for the basic symptoms - "F:/"
or "D:/" drive(s) do not appear in the "My computer"
window, and I CANNOT fix the problem, and when I try, the
Autosearch tells me that it has already installed the best
driver for the drive. I've tried fixing the IDE controller
by bootlegging it and running it under a driver that it
wasn't fully compatible with, but it didn't work, so I
restored the original settings. I just hope I haven't done
any irreparable damage to my PC. It's a Compaq Presario
5410 with everything still stock as far as drives and
drivers are concerned.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, find or make a bootable floppy diskette and make sure it works.

Second, run SCANREGW.EXE and make a backup of the Registry before you begin,
even if it tells you one has already been made.

Next, restart the computer in Safe Mode and remove all the entries in the
"Hard Disk Controllers" section of the Device Manager.  You may have to
remove the Primary and Secondary controllers before you can remove the
parent controller.  Also remove all CDROM drives you find there.  If you
find any unknown or problem devices (marked with a yellow question mark or
yellow exclamation mark) remove those also.

Finally, restart the system normally and let Windows find and detect the
drives and controllers again.  If this process fails, use the bootable
floppy diskette to get into DOS mode and run SCANREG /RESTORE to restore the
backed-up Registry file and then restart the system normally.

This usually sorts out these kinds of problems.  If it does not, post back
and let us know.

get freeware program TweakUI and install it,  then lookup
ControlPanel/TweakUi/MYComputer Settings and check the required drive boxes.
