When I try to run a scan disk I keep getting an error
message saying that is has had to stop because somethiong
was writing to the drive. After 10 times I disaalow the
erro message and after many hours the scan disk does
eventually finish. I've tried shutting down access to the
net, and shut down all my other apps including my
firewall, viurs protection and cyber patrol. Any thoughts
on how to remedy.
I have some, but not a great deal of computer experience.

It could be a Screensaver, modem connection, scheduled task whatever?

Try running Scandisk in MS-Dos mode. At the C:> prompt type Scandisk and press the ENTER key. Type EXIT to return to normal mode.

Hope this helps.
