The CD-ROM cannot run after I insert cds. The dialogue
box said "This device is not ready." Could there be some
programs missing?
Hi,
The following troubleshooting steps are the first step to troubleshoot
CD-ROM related issues If you still receive the issue after performing these
steps, please reply with the results of the tests.
Perform the following steps in the order listed and check the CD-ROM
drive after performing each step:
NOTE: Test the CD-ROM drive with a different CD before
performing these steps to make sure that the CD is not
defective.
* Set the BIOS defaults.
* Determine if it is a hardware or software problem.
* Troubleshoot the issue in Safe Mode.
* Delete NOIDE in Registry.
=== Set the BIOS defaults ===
To reset the computer to its default BIOS settings, perform the following
steps:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Press F10 key when the red Compaq logo appears during Startup.
3. Select English for language.
4. Select "Set Defaults and Exit".
The BIOS of the computer will be set to default.
=== Determine if it is a hardware or software problem ===
To determine if the issue is caused by hardware or software problem, try to
boot the system using QuickRestore CD or Recovery CD.
NOTE: If you do not have a QuickRestore CD, boot the system using
a Windows 98/ME boot disk. If the CD-ROM drive is detected
during startup, the hardware is functional.
* If the System boots to the QuickRestore menu, the drive is
functional. Try the next troubleshooting step.
* If the system boots to Windows, the CD-ROM drive or the IDE cable
may not be functional due to either a connection/jumper
configuration problem or physical defect. I recommend that you
contact a HP Authorized Support Provider to resolve the issue.
=== Troubleshoot the issue in Safe Mode ===
The next step in the troubleshooting process is to reinstall the drive in
Safe mode. Follow these steps to reinstall the CD-ROM drive:
1. Remove any CD from the CD-ROM drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Press the F8 key repeatedly When the red Compaq logo appears on
startup.
4. Select Safe mode from the list of options displayed and press
Enter. The system will enter Safe mode.
5. Right-click the My Computer icon on desktop and click Properties.
6. Click the Device Manager tab.
7. Click the plus (+) sign next to CD-ROM.
8. Right-click the first entry and then click Remove.
9. Repeat step 8 for all entries under CD-ROM.
10. Click OK and close the window.
=== Deleting NOIDE in Registry ===
To delete NOIDE in registry, follow these steps:
CAUTION: The registry contains critical information and a
registry backup is essential. An incorrect registry
entry may cause serious system problems or prevent the
computer from starting. You will not be warned of any
incorrect registry entries. If the registry is not
backed up, the only way to recover the system is to
reinstall the operating system. To backup and edit the
registry follow these steps:
1. Click Start and then Run.
2. Type Regedit in the Open field and click OK.
3. Click "Registry" in the menu.
4. Click "Export Registry" from the drop-down menu.
5. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk (C:).
6. Type Backup.reg in the File Name field.
7. Verify that the "All" radio button under the "Export Range" is
selected.
8. Click Save.
After taking the registry backup, follow these steps:
1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
3. In the Edit menu, click Find, type in NOIDE, and then click Find
Next. When the search stops, the NOIDE is highlighted.
4. Press the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm the deletion.
5. Press F3 to continue the search and delete all NOIDE entries.
6. Click Registry and select Exit.
7. Restart the computer.
