Happy easter to all,
Though they work(ed) properly, my CD-writer and DVD are
not detected in ms-dos or in Win 98 'my computer'.  I can
eject the drives etc., so they are powered.  They
vanished.  I am aware of a registery editing method, that
solves the prob for win 2000 & XP but the same does not
apply to Win 98.

Help me!!!

Hi,

To resolve the issue of CD-ROM drive not listed in My Computer, perform the
following steps in order:

*  Run FDISK/MBR from DOS mode.
*  Remove the five ENUM keys from the Registry.
*  Debug the Bios

NOTE:  Check if the CD-ROM drive is displayed in My Computer
           after performing each step.

=== Run FDISK/MBR from DOS mode ===

To run FDISK/MBR from DOS mode, follow these steps:

1.  Restart the computer.
2.  Press the F8 key repeatedly when the red Compaq logo appears on
   startup.
3.  Select Command Prompt Safe mode only from the list of options
displayed and press Enter.  The system will now be at a C:\
   prompt.
4.  Type the following command and press Enter:

   CD WINDOWS\COMMAND

5.  At C:\WINDOW\COMMAND type FDISK/MBR
6.  After a few seconds, exit the command prompt.
7.  Restart the computer.

=== Remove the five ENUM keys from the Registry ===

To remove the five ENUM keys from the Registry, follow these steps:

1.  Restart the computer.
2.  Press the F8 key repeatedly When the red Compaq logo appears on
   startup.

Enter.  The system will enter Safe mode.

In Safe mode, perform the following registry modifications:

CAUTION:  A registry backup is essential.  An incorrect registry
entry may cause serious system problems or prevent the
computer from starting.  You will not be warned of
any incorrect registry entries.  If the registry is
not backed up, the only way to recover the system is
              to reinstall the operating system.

To back up the registry, follow these steps:

1.  Click Start and then click Run.
2.  Type Regedit in the Open field and click OK.
3.  Click "Registry" in the menu.
4.  Click "Export" from the drop-down menu.
5.  Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk(C:).
6.  Type Backup.reg in the File Name field.
7.  Click Save.

After taking the registry backup, follow these steps:

1.  Click the plus (+) sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2.  Click the plus (+) sign next to ENUM.
3.  Right-click the ESDI key and then click Delete.
4.  Repeat step 3 to delete the following registry keys:

   FLOP, MF, ISAPNP, and SCSI.

5.  Exit the registry and restart the computer.

=== Debug the Bios ===

1.  Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.  The system will boot to the
   DOS screen.
2.  Type DEBUG and press Enter.
3.  Type o 70 18 and press Enter.
4.  Type o 71FF and press Enter.
5.  Type Q and press Enter.
6.  Power the system off and on by unplugging and re-plugging the
   system into the power outlet.

The CD-ROM should now be listed in My Computer.
