I have windows 98 first edition on a 1999 e-machine. I
need to upgrade to second edition to use wireless
internet service. I contacted e-machine with no luck and
I also contacted microsoft and was informed that mailings
were discontinued as of 1/1/04

Any suggestions?

Try eBay or other auction sites.

There are two products that will do what you want.

1.  The Microsoft Second Edition Updates disk.  This is the one that
Microsoft sold for $20 or so and which only works to upgrade an
installed Windows 98 original to Windows 98 Second Edition.

2.  Windows 98 Second Edition Upgrade.  This is the full retail
upgrade package which will work with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or
Windows 98 Original to upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition.  It will
also do a "clean install" of Windows 98 Second Edition on an empty
hard drive provided you have a disk from a previous version of Windows
to insert when asked to prove eligibility for the upgrade.

Good luck
