My old hard drive crshed an i bought a new one. When i
installed win 98 sec. ed. the hard drive space was ony
recognized at 2gb, but i know i have 20 in there.

How do i make the computer recognize the other 18 gb the
hard drive has?

I tried fdisk option 1 and it did not work...im still not
sure what that was anyway.

What i need to know is where or how to fix this
problem...I have tried the knowledge base but all that
stuff looks like spaghetti to me:)

Anyway...if anyone knows...please point me the right way.

thanks

Sounds like you installed a FAT16 formatted partition, which is limited to
2GB.  As I recall, FDISK under Win98 *asks* if you want support for large
HDs before partitioning, and if you answer Yes, it creates a FAT32
compatible partition instead (which will give you the full 20GB).

If this is the case, you can either start over and run FDISK correctly
(which will delete your current Win98 installation), or download BootIt NG
( http://www.bootitng.com ) and convert the FAT16 partition to FAT32
(probably simpler).  Simply unzip, execute bootitng.exe to create floppy,
boot the floppy, and when the Welcome screen appears, select Cancel (to
abort the install).  Follow the prompts to the main menu, and select
Partition Work.  Now select the FAT16 partition, hit Resize, select the
maxsize (should be set by default), select FAT32, and hit Ok.  When
complete, hit Close to exit Partition Work, remove the floppy, and reboot.
When rebooted, Win98 will be running as FAT32, the full 20GB capacity.

HTH

Thanks for the help Jim...I ended up scrapping my only
partition and then had to start over. at first it would
not let me do anything to the existing partitions...then
all of a sudden it let me...i went through the process as
you indicated for large disk support, then i reformatted
the drive, and then i installed a clean copy of windows 98
se.

When i got back to the hard drive and checked it,there was
my 20 gb...

Just wanted to say i appreciate you looking for people
like me...that was cool...
