i am running WIN 98SE  on a 166 PC,, ( i had it rebuilt
and was running great for 2 weeks)
i shut it off after every use  and was using just for
internet.
so when i started up tonite i get this error message.

"cannot start Windows. because VMM32.VXD was not found or
is damaged.  need to run setup program again to install
VMM32.VXD.  press any key to cont.   ( I did ) then got
this error message. "  Failure..  DISK BOOT FALURE, INSERT
SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

so does that mean the WIN 98 SE  CD ?  or what?

Vmm32 is built during the installation of W98 so I suggest you install W98
over the top of the existing system.  Any updates will probably have to be
reinstalled after the installation is complete.  For information on
installing W98, go to:  http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html

Given that the PC is pretty old, you also might want to check the health of
the hard drive.  Determine the brand, go to the maker's web site, download
their diagnostic software which runs from a floppy disk and check the drive.

Get Win DLG:  http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp#windlg

Get any printed info off of the motherboard itself and then do a search on
it using the www.google.com search engine.

Go into the BIOS setup and see if the computer can be
configured to boot from the CD drive.  If not, you will
have to start it with a boot floppy and run "setup.exe"
from the Win98 directory of the Windows 98 CD.
