Please talk to me like I'm two since I don't really understand what is
happening. I can't figure out what is causing this.
As I type or as I'm browsing or doing anything on my pc, suddenly my
keystrokes will stop working. I originally thought that it was simply the
keyboard wearing out but have since begun to wonder if it's something else.
For example, I was reading a webpage and using my mouse, I tried to scroll
down the page. I then accidentally clicked on the page and it highlighted
the paragraph. No matter where I clicked it would highlight a bunch of words
or lines.
Then, while I am using Microsoft Works' word processor, I'll be trying to
highlight a sentence or a word and it highlights other things sporadically.
I can't tell that there is any one thing that is running nor anything I am
doing at the time that can cause this. It just happens out of the blue and
seems to be happening at random.
If I restart the pc, it does not always reset everything. Once when I
restarted a message flashed up *before* Windows loaded saying 'keyboard or
system error'. Well, that narrowed it down (sarcasm is intentional).
Needless to say, the keyboard didn't work.
However, if I completely shut the pc down and then turn it back on
everything is reset, for a time.
I'm hoping that it is only the keyboard but since the highlighting with a
mouse is acting funny I'm *very* worried that my hard drive is about to go
out.
Any ideas? If it's a driver, please explain how to update that. I'm using
DSL if it matters. Which, btw, earlier even the dsl modem stopped
functioning. All in all, the whole system doesn't freeze, just the use of
the keyboard and the mouse highlighting.
TIA very much!

Since you've already identified one certain problem - the keyboard error -
let's start by hooking up a different keyboard and see if that makes the
problem any better. If that doesn't work there are other things to try but
this has the benefit of being the simplest one to try first. :-)

Wow, that was fast! Thanks, I have to go out and get school supplies and
I'll get one then. Thank you for pointing out the obvious to me, and I'm not
being sarcastic, honestly. I suppose I hesitated because I really thought it
was something else. I needed someone like you to say, 'just do it already'.
;-)
I'll let you know one way or another. Again, thank you.

Happy to be of service. Do let us know how things turn out. As I said
there are other things we can try if the keyboard doesn't pan out.

Aside from the obvious: that your keyboard may be defective
and in need of replacement,
1. Your keyboard driver might be corrupt
2. There is a bug in your browser
You can opt for reinstalling your keyboard driver. Don't do
this if you don't have some acquaintance with updating
device drivers.
Log into your PC's manufacturers support website, download
the Kbd driver and run it or if you have a Win98 CD go to
Start> Control Panel>System properties>Keyboard and then
update the driver choosing the location in the CD.
If you are having problems highlighting text with the mouse
(as many people do), you can instead use the shift +
up-down-left-right arrows, and shift + av pag-re pag; this
will highlight the text and have better control.
Good luck

>C.Here is the sure cure for you problem, first the

simply clicking disable this device, you can latter
inable the disabled devices by clicking inable, of coarse
you would not disable your monitor, now you will be able
to tell which one of those distant devices is defective
by inabling them one at a time when your problem
reappears, the device last inable is the culprit. the
question now is do you know how to disable the many
divices on your computer saftly?
If the above the not solve the problem which I'm sure it
will, you may need plenty of light for this, pick up your
computer and look underneath sunlight is preferred rather
than artificial light ,so go over to a bright window,
pick up the computer and through it out the window, you
will not have to worry about that computer anymore.
