Problems with Scan Disc - Defragmentation

I have updated Windows, but I am still having problems
when I attempt to run scan disc and attempt to de-frag.

There appears to be something "blocking" the process
because it just runs and runs without ever completing the
process of either completing the "scanning disc" and it
will not "de-frag".

I have attempted to run NortonsSystemsWorks and there does
not appear to be any errors with WinDoctor but the there
is obviously a problem with DiscDoctor since it will not
complete, and there is an error when running the
defragmentation and it will not complete.

I am using the Windows 98 operating system.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi David,

Here are a few tips to consider when running Scandisk and Defrag.
1. Restart to the Command Prompt and do a thorough Scandisk on the
drive first and repair any errors.
Restart the computer. Hold down the CTRL key while the system is
booting. This will take you to the Boot Menu then select Command
Prompt Only. Run Scandisk on the drive from there by typing SCANDISK
then press enter and let it perform a surface scan.
2. Close all running programs using Close Programs (Ctrl + Alt + Del)
  except Explorer.
3. Turn off screen savers and any power management
4. Delete Temp files and Temporary Internet Files
5. Empty the Recycle Bin
6. Do a virus scan with up to date virus software

7. Disable PC-Cillin if installed
8. Turn off and disconnect DSL/Cable Modem
9. Run Ad-aware to remove any possible spyware

Note: Defragging in Safe Mode is another option.

David,

The fastest snd best way to avoid the problems that you
have described are to run "scanning disc" and "de-frag" in
safe mode.  To run Window 98 in safe mode, just restart
your computer and hold down the control key.  For
additional information on safe mode, you can refer to the
Microsoft KB.
