Thanks both of you for that, it turned out my cd rom
wasnt playing so I managed to load via my cdrw. Now the
next problem (oh my I will learn the hard way!).  Having
got windows back I have the following problem with
hardware......
everything seems to have loaded on 'plug and play' except
1.a pci multimeader audio device and pci card.  Prompts
come up telling me to install the drivers (as windows 98
cannot find them.
I thought I could download them from the internet (having
tried every disc I have) but although there is a
modem....

2.it has not been picked up by windows.  I have tried
installing this with all the discs I have, but none seems
relevant or helpful.  I actually ventured inside the
machine and found the modem but there is nothing on it
except 'made in China' and VRM V1.2
I have tried searching the net but nothing helps.

Are the two things related? Is the PCI thing the same
thing as a modem? What would you suggest I do now?
(except never venture this far again!!)If I put one of my
sons discs in (Thomas the tank) it says there is no sound.

Hope you can help (not too technical stuff please) thanks
again. Marsha.

This sounds a lot like the drivers for the PCI controller
are not installed (You figured this out already). I will
assume that the modem is also a PCI modem. (Now you see
the connection.) You best bet is to go to the
manufacturer of the laptop and try and download the
motherboard/controller drivers. This will allow windows
to reconize the rest of the PCI system. You will have to
do this from another computer unless you can access the
internet through the Ethernet port (most likely also
PCI). If you can not find the Laptop manufacturer on the
net then try doing a google/Yahoo search for the Model
number. You may also be able to see what chipset is being
used on the motherboard, but I do not recomend this
unless you really know what you are doing.

Good Luck,

Jim

The PCI controller driver allows the system to see the
other PCI devices and then 1 by 1 they will be added to
your system. These maybe on a disk that was shipped with
the laptop. If you were lucky.
