Best Non-Bloatware Application Versions for PIII 600MHz laptop?

Hi,

I have recently been gifted a Compaq M300.  It's super thin and light but
only a PIII 600MHz machine, I plan to put the max memory in it (I think
128+256MB) to improve things as much as possible. Also plan to increase HDD
to about 30GB (any problems with doing this/ will partioning make it
faster?).

I typically will only have 1 major app (ie Word or excel) open at one time
so the computer has most resources available to run apps as fast as
possible.  I don't want to run WinXP or other bloatware that will slow it
down to a crawl. My pet peeve it waiting for apps to start-up (including
windows so if anyone has any good tips please let me know also).  I plan to
do a fresh install of Win 98 SE, so with all that in mind, does anyone have
any comments on:

?1 Are all Win98 SE's the same or is/was there a last release or build
number I can refer to?

?2 Does Windows still have updates for Win98SE?

?3 What is the oldest/most stable/quickest start-up/quickest operationally;
version of Word (WinWord Version 2 etc) that will open the latest documents
created in Word XP.  It doesn't have to open all macro's as I don't
encounter them too much in Word documents.

?4 What is the oldest/most stable/quickest start-up/quickest operationally
version of Excel that will open the latest spreadsheets created in Excel XP.
Macro's a are more likely with excel, so any comments about limitations
would be appreciated.

?5 Version numbers for other app's like:
Adobe Reader
Internet Explorer (or other browser)
Email Browser
Audio & Video Media Players
and any others that I have forgotten that you think may be useful.

Thanks in advance for any comments (except any flaming :-)).

Take a look at Cruciall.COM.

That model has one slot for memory and is limited to
one 256 MB stick.

Check the Compaq site to see how large a disk that system can take.

Laptops frequently require the laptop nfgr's version of Windows in order to
get all the correct drivers.

According to Compaq spec sheet. Max Ram is 320MB see:

OK.  I looked on Crucial.com and mis-read what I saw.

They claim that the M300 33Mhz. Can go to 256 MB and other CPU speed models
can go to 320.

Sorry for the mistake.

There was a 4.10.2222 A and 4.10.2222 B, but they're pretty much the same
anyway, so either will do (aslong as you get a retail version, and stay away
from the OEM/upgrade versions)

Yes

If you want quick and not bloated, forget it and go for Open Office instead

If your just after a PDF viewer, forget Adobe and get a freeware alternative
instead;

www.pricelessware.org
www.webgrid.co.uk

5.5 is the best one IMHO, but I personally prefer to use Avant Browser (IE
shell replacement) instead of vanilla IE;

www.avantbrowser.com (my personal favourite)

Outlook Express 5.5

If your not bothered about anything flash then Media Player 6.4 will do

I multitask using 4.0 on a Pentium 1; does that count?

>Internet Explorer (or other browser)
Apparently Opera is faster than IE; some sites however are
optimized for IE then I'de choose 5.5 too.

>Email Browser
Do people still use Pegasus? Otherwise Outlook Express
again.

>Audio & Video Media Players
For Audio Cd's use built in CD Player
For Audio-only files Winamp5
For Video files Media Player 6.4

Thanks Guys,

I take it that win2k on a PIII 600MHz machine 320MB RAM will crawl right?

I am trying the advant browser, seems to be stable etc Firefox and Opera may
also be on the list.

Re Outlook express I hear that Microsoft is pulling support for Hotmail
which means that it would only good for newsgroups.  any other newsgroup
browser to recommend?

Cheers

Well, Minimum requirments say it should load on my Pentium
1 with 200mhz and 128mb ram.. :) Not that I have access to
any copy of win2k :( Must fidn out about that press
release evaluation...

Forgot all about Firefox..

True, next year you won't be able to access hotmail from
outlook express or any client unless you pay. So you'll
have to use your browser.

It'll be fine on those spec's (hell, I've got XP Pro running on my old P350
w/90MB Ram, and it runs like a dream (and it multi-tasks!) ;o))

As for news readers, the best place to get advice on those is over at
