I have been trying to update Firmware for my CD writer, and turning OFF DMA
may be required. However there is no checkbox to facilitate this action. In
fact, none of my devices has a checbox to either turn DMA 'on' OR 'off'. I am
pretty sure that I have seen this available in the past, but am wondering if
any of the W98 updates etc. have either dis-enabled or embedded this facility
somehow.
Note:- I cannot even change any resource settings, as I get the message that
no modifications are allowed.
Any comments anyone?

You should install the driver for motherboard (actually -- inf-file for
its chipset).

It can be found on CDROM that came with your motherboard.
Or it can be downloaded: for Intel chipset -- from
http://support.intel.com/support/ , for VIA -- from www.viaarena.com
