whenever i try to open regedit, it gives following error message "This
program has performed an illegal operation & will be terminated, quit all
proagrams & restart windows. The program tried to execute an invalid
instruction"
However
even afer restarting the windows, problem is still there. What should i do?

If there is a details button on the error message, click it and post that
message here verbatim (registers not required).
In any case, I would do a complete scan of the drive with an up to date anti
virus program followed by a malware hunt with updated versions of:
AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
CWShredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html (download

Try using sfc to extract a fresh copy of "regedit.exe" from your Windows 98
CD to the "C:\Windows" folder.
