I have a Gateway comp and when I start it up it stops on a black screen that
says Device driver not found: 'CD1'.
No vald CDROM device drivers selected
C:\>
What should I do. Does anyone know how to get it started back up.

Thank You

Have you changed the boot device sequence in the BIOS?  Is there a floppy
start up disk in the floppy drive?  Assuming the answers are no, can you
start in safe mode (tap the Ctrl key during boot process to get to the start
up menu)?  If so, rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys files by changing
their extension to:  .old

Then reboot and see if it starts in normal mode.

No I have not changed the boot device sequence in th BIOS, There is not a
floppy startup disk in the floppy drive and I can't start it up in Safe mode.
It still says the same thing.

thanks

Try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly
during bootup.  If that works, rename the "c:\autoexec.bat" and
"c:\config.sys" files, then restart normally.

When I try restarting the comp in safe mode it comes to a black screen with
a 6 choices. 1. Normal 2. Logged  (\Bootlog.txt) 3. Safe Mode 4. Step-bystep-
confirmation 5. Command prompt only and 6 Saf mode command prompt only. when
enter 3 on the bottom it says Windows is bypassing startup files. It then
says C:\> and there I can type something to start it up. What would I type.

Start Notepad on the computer you are using now, copy and paste the
following text to it and save it to a floppy as "a:\winboot.ini".  Start the
problem computer, insert the floppy, type
"c:\windows\command\move  a:\winboot.ini  c:"
and press "Enter".  Then remove the floppy and restart.

WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

BootGUI=1
;end

When I type that file name t says its a bad command or file name. Also when I
restart the computer it still says Device driver not found: 'CD1'.
Novalid CDROM device drivers selected
C:\>_ so nothing has done a thing yet. Thanks for the info though

Would I possibly neet to download a new Device driver for 'CD1'?
Ben Myers - 17 Dec 2005 18:27 GMT
Try typing "dir  /s  c:\win.com" at the "C:\>" prompt.  If the file exists, please
repost with the directory in which it is located.  If it is missing, you may have to
reinstall Windows.

What should I do
Ben Myers - 17 Dec 2005 18:57 GMT
To reinstall Windows, go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and
create a Windows 98 boot floppy.  Use it to start the problem computer,
select "Start with CD support", then insert your Windows 98 CD, type
"setup" and press "Enter".

This message came up while I was intalling windows 98. CDR101: Not ready
reading drive D
Abort, Retry, Fail?
Ben Myers - 17 Dec 2005 20:21 GMT
Try cleaning the Windows CD.  Also, you might try testing it on another computer,
perhaps the one you are using now.  If this doesn't help, please repost with more
details, including what part of the installation process the error message appears.

Doesn't the WINBOOT.INI file require the padding like the MSDOS.SYS
file does to ensure that it is more than 1024 bytes in size?

It is my understanding that the files are fully functional without the padding,
which is apparently used to prevent problems with third party software.
