Hi
I have had windows 98se running on my old machine, a
233MHz beast that became too slow to tolerate. On
upgrading the motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-8LD533 and a
new Maxtor 40G 7200 HD and reinstalling the OS, the CD is
not showing up. It is there in the BIOS but not in
Windows. I have been through the knowledge base and tried
everything there that I can find to no avail.

Please help. It is Mum's computer and she wants it back.

thanks
Richard

1.  Do you have Tweak UI installed?  If so, go to My Computer tab and
put marks in all drives.

2.  Check for a lastdrive statement in the config.sys file and if it
exists, make sure it reads:  lastdrive=z

3.  Run regedit.exe and open it to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

In the right pane, look for a last drive statement and make sure it
reads "Z"

4.  Control panel, system, performance tab:  is there any comment about
MSDos compatibility mode?
