I originally posted this problem aug 24th but havent
gotten a reply and its driving me crazy. Any burnt cd's I
try to run are not recognized and I get a message that
drives not ready. I narrowed this down now to cdrw disks
only. My backup disk for windows 98 is a cdr and runs ok
as well as a cdr I have for another program. I have run
these disks in the past with no problem.

Were these CD/RW disks created on the machine that you are now trying to
read them on, or were they created on a different machine?

Look here for CD diagnostic utilities that may help to track the problem
down:

They were created on 2 machines other than mine but all
stopped working at same time. I have one program containg
6 cds all created on the same machine, 1 is a cdr and it
works fine the other 5 are cdrw and no go on any of them.
I have 2 other cdr cd's created on other machine that also
work fine and 2 cdrw's that wont run. I will try your
advise on the diagnostic tools. Thanks

Look at the CD properties in a machine where they work.  If the file system
is UDF then the UDF reader on the problem machine might need to be
re-installed.

I have that problem with my mothers drive. cdrw's created on 2 of my
machines work on all newer drives, but not on the older one's (1996 and
earlier). Not quite sure why yet. I'm still looking into it.
